How to Choose Your Movers

Moving into a new home can be an exciting time for you and your family. When getting ready to make this transition, the most important choice you will make is your moving company. Choosing the wrong company can turn a should-be incredible new milestone into an absolute disaster. Armstrong is here to help you ask the right questions so you get the right team.

1. Do your research

When you’re beginning your search for the perfect moving crew, make sure you look into previous customer experiences. Research their reviews and do online searches to determine if they give good service or if there is a long history of dissatisfied customers. Having positive reviews without comments or no reviews at all may also be a red flag. Pick a team that has a history of positive experiences with specific customer feedback.

2. Watch for warning signs

Much like a company hiring a new employee, make sure you do your background check. Look into the company’s business license, qualifications and partnerships with reputable organizations like the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA). If it is a smaller company, make sure their U.S. DOT licensing and insurance are up to date and adequate.

3. Ask a LOT of questions

Don’t get surprised by details when it’s too late! Ask everything you should know before signing any agreement. Pose questions such as:

  • What do you need from me to complete a thorough estimate?
  • Will you do a walk-through in advance?
  • What insurance do you offer?
  • What all is included in your pricing estimate?
  • What is not included in your estimate?
  • How many crew members will be assigned to me on moving day?
  • What is your availability?
  • If a company cannot easily answer the questions you ask, they probably aren’t the team for you.

4. Read contracts thoroughly

Make sure you know absolutely everything a moving company is asking you to commit to. Check the fine print to make sure you can hold the team responsible for breakages and accidents. Before signing anything make sure you’ve already hammered out all the details to your satisfaction like the move timing, insurance coverage, and pricing.

5. Get a walkthrough

If a potential moving company does not offer or tries to skip this step, you don’t want to hire them. A responsible, thorough team with your best interests in mind will always want to survey your home before the move day. This step is crucial to making sure you have the perfect number of crew members and the job is done right.

6. Ask about additional services

This is easily overlooked, but a very helpful step to learning about your potential move team. When your family is uprooting and moving to a new home, it’s incredibly helpful to have a team that will not only move your belongings, but also offer additional assistance such as cleaning your old home, providing short-term and long-term storage solutions, arranging a personal move coordinator and more. These additional services can help make your move stress-free, so you can focus on this next exciting chapter of your life.
