The Best Top Ten Post-Move Tips from Industry Experts
Moving can be tough and we know this better than anyone! That’s why our team at Armstrong Relocation – Huntsville has made it our mission to help make moves across town, across the country and around the world smoother and stress-free for you and your family.
We also know how easy it is to forget all the little details that come after your move, so we’ve put together our top tips to get you feeling more at home after your move.
1. Forward your mail
This is a simple, quick step that you can take a week before you move into your new home. You can choose to update your new residence online here or stop by your local post office and fill out a change of address form.
After forwarding your mail to your new address, you will need to update your address with independent mailers including your bank, doctors, employer, and government agencies from whom you get regular mail.
2. Schedule turning on utilities
Turning on your utilities is an important step you’ll want to arrange the same week as your move. This is especially important if you are a home buyer, as most sellers will ask that you arrange for the utilities to be transferred to your name upon closing on the house.
Remember all your essential utilities, too! In addition to the electricity, you’ll want to arrange your water, gas, cable and internet. If you depend on the internet to work from home or use streaming services in lieu of cable, you’ll want to arrange an internet connection appointment ahead of time.
3. Unpack essentials first
When you’re getting settled into your new home you want to have a clear, smooth plan of action to make your transition as easy as possible. Make sure everyone in your household packs overnight bags with items like clothing and hygiene products for the first night in your new home, and pack essentials boxes for the first few days getting settled in the new home.
Your essentials boxes should be free of clutter and hold only the items you will need immediately such as dishes and utensils, charging cords, bedding, towels, home office supplies, and anything else you may need right away.
4. Get a security system
Setting up a camera or security system can often help you adjust to strange new surroundings faster.
If you’re moving to a big city this can be especially helpful, as many security systems offer neighborhood insights to local crime and connect you to carbon dioxide and fire alerts that will call local emergency responders for you.
5. Recycle your packaging material
Packaging is one of the planet’s largest contributors to waste and pollution so recycling your packing materials is a great way to do your part for the planet and save space in your garbage can!
Not looking to add another thing to your to do list? Be sure to ask us about our debris removal services and we’ll do the recycling for you!
6. Learn your new trash route
Moving can make a lot of trash and you’ll want to make sure you have your cans on the curb on the correct day at the right time or know your apartment’s waste guidelines. If you’re a new renter or homeowner with a designated trash disposal day you can find your city’s here.
7. Find your fuse box and water controls
Accidents happen and you’ll want to know how to flip the breaker or turn off water quickly should you need to.
If you’re planning on replacing any water fixtures or having someone come to your home to do any HVAC or plumbing repairs, you’ll want to be able to show them exactly where everything is controlled.
8. Check your air filter
There’s no such thing as air that is too clean. Regardless of whether the previous residents replaced the air filter recently, that filter will be full of foreign allergens, dust, dirt, and possibly pet dander. HVAC experts say that an average home with no pets should change their filter every 90 days, every 60 days with pets, and every 20-45 days if you have more than one pet. Give your home a fresh start with a fresh air filter.
9. Check smoke detectors
Check those batteries! You can never be too careful and having your safety and peace of mind come first is not something you’ll ever regret.
10. Get to know your neighborhood
Now that you’ve checked these boxes, it’s time to really start enjoying your new home. Go for a walk around your new area to see what shops and parks may be within walking distance. Whether your new home is in Hampton Cove or Five Points, there will be something unique to discover about any corner of Huntsville you make home.
Say hello to a neighbor you haven’t met yet. If you have children find your new favorite playground or library nearby. This is your new community, make it your own!
